{"id":5918,"date":"2025-10-20T03:19:31","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T16:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.temp.irap-dev.org\/international-partners-convene-to-improve-motorcyclist-safety\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T15:06:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T05:06:12","slug":"international-partners-convene-to-improve-motorcyclist-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irap.org\/pt\/international-partners-convene-to-improve-motorcyclist-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Parceiros Internacionais se Re\u00fanem para Melhorar a Seguran\u00e7a de Motociclistas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>iRAP CEO Greg Smith joined international partners in Gothenburg, Sweden this month for a critical look at how we create a Safe System for motorcyclists, the focus of a globally significant project funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trafikverket.se\/\">Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The international <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saferresearch.com\/news\/new-safer-partner-project-aims-save-lives-focus-two-wheelers\">\u2018Safe System Principles for Motorcycles\u2019<\/a> Project recognises that the global goal to halve the number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2030 cannot be achieved without a significant reduction in powered two-wheeler road crashes.<\/p>\n<p>The project workshop held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saferresearch.com\/\">SAFER Vehicle and Traffic Safety Centre<\/a> at Chalmers University brought together global expertise from Sweden, Australia, Malaysia, Italy and beyond, with contributions from Autoliv, iRAP, Trafikverket, University of Florence, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), L\u00f6sningar, Safe System Solutions, Strandroth Inc., and University of Florence.<\/p>\n<p>With a global perspective, the 12-month project is identifying the necessary requirements for vehicle safety, road infrastructure, protective equipment, and speed limits to ensure a safer environment for powered two-wheelers. For example, by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing Safe System boundary conditions for common motorcycle crash scenarios;<\/li>\n<li>Translating these into infrastructure design principles for commuting, leisure, and mixed-use contexts; and<\/li>\n<li>Validating these principles against real-world crash data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>iRAP CEO Greg Smith said, \u201cWe&#8217;re delighted to be a part of this important initiative. We know that globally, less than 30% of roads meet the target 3-star or better safety standard for motorcyclists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201ciRAP Star Ratings providing an objective measure of the level of safety \u2018built in\u2019 to the road infrastructure for motorcyclists. Safer Road Investment Plans identify and prioritise evidence-based infrastructure improvements to save motorcyclists\u2019 lives and reduce injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDedicated motorcycle lanes, road alignment, skid resistance, surface and roadside hazards, and overtaking provision are all examples of infrastructure elements which can impact safety,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key outcomes of the project will be guidance on appropriate speed limits, taking into account the diverse transport needs of motorcyclists \u2013 from daily commuting to recreational riding.
