{"id":86047,"date":"2026-04-20T04:34:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T03:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irap.org\/?p=86047"},"modified":"2026-04-20T05:16:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T04:16:51","slug":"improving-road-safety-on-silao-san-felipe-highway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irap.org\/nl\/2026\/04\/improving-road-safety-on-silao-san-felipe-highway\/","title":{"rendered":"Verkeersveiligheid op de snelweg Silao-San Felipe in Mexico onder de loep."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]Improving road safety conditions on the Silao\u2013San Felipe Highway in Guanajuato, Mexico, is the goal of a project led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/obrapublica.guanajuato.gob.mx\/\">Guanajuato State Ministry of Public Works (SOP)<\/a>, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semicmex.com.mx\/\">Servicios Mexicanos de Ingenier\u00eda Civil (SEMIC)<\/a> and the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP).<\/p>\n<p>As part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen safety and mobility across the State network, the technical assistance and capacity-building project aims to identify areas for improvement and prioritize road sections with the greatest safety challenges along this approximately 70 kilometre corridor.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the corridor has seen numerous traffic crashes, underscoring the importance of implementing evidence-based actions to improve road conditions and reduce risks for road users.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the project, a comprehensive Star Rating assessment was conducted in accordance with the iRAP methodology, in which 1-star roads represent the highest risk and 5-star roads are the safest.<\/p>\n<p>Kind findings include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 30 per cent of the route rates the international safety standard of 3-star or better for vehicle occupants.<\/li>\n<li>For motorcyclists, significant areas for improvement were identified to achieve at least a 3-star rating for this road user group.<\/li>\n<li>\u00b7 Although pedestrian crossings exist, a lack of adequate signage was identified at some.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Guanajuato-SR-map.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Guanajuato SR map&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/I-1.jpeg&#8221; title_text=&#8221;I 1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Star Rating results for vehicle occupants and the SEMIC survey vehicle used to perform the assessments<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Based on the results, an evidence-based Safer Road Investment Plan (SRIP) was developed to optimise road safety for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists, aligned to the 3-star or better safety standard.<\/p>\n<p>Among the identified priority measures that are cost-effective in both the short and long term, the following were recommended for implementation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Road widening<\/li>\n<li>Upgrading undivided high-risk sections to dual carriageway<\/li>\n<li>Improvement of the road surface<\/li>\n<li>Installation of safety barriers<\/li>\n<li>Installation of rumble strips on road shoulders<\/li>\n<li>Construction of sidewalks and bike lanes at critical points<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In addition, technical staff from the SOP received specialized training from iRAP, which will strengthen institutional capacity for the evaluation and continuous improvement of the state highway network.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary of Public Works, Eng. Juan Pablo P\u00e9rez Beltr\u00e1n, highlighted the importance of the initiative and noted, \u201cAt the Secretariat, we are committed to road safety and assessing the roads under our jurisdiction, so that we can intervene efficiently and effectively to safeguard the safety of road users.
