ThaiRAP, the Road Assessment Programme for Thailand has been recognised for its excellence helping to advance road safety in the country at the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) Thailand Conference this month.<\/p>\n

ThaiRAP Lead, Kasem Choocharukul, Professor and Head of the Civil Engineering Department of Chulalongkorn University, was presented with a Certificate of Recognition and honorary pin from His Excellency Mr Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, the President of the National Assembly and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand, for contributions to road safety.<\/p>\n

In receiving the award, Professor Choocharukul said, “I am grateful to receive this recognition. As part of the Parliamentary Subcommittee on Infrastructure and Vehicles, I am committed to driving safer roads for all. I am also proud that ThaiRAP, led by the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, was recognized for its collaborative efforts in road safety.”<\/p>\n

The PACTS model of parliamentary engagement in road safety has been adopted by Thailand\u2019s Parliament to address their own road safety challenges.<\/p>\n

In October 2024, the Thai Parliament established a Road Safety Working Group and four subcommittees, chaired by Mr. Pichet Chuamuangphan, Deputy Speaker of Parliament. The ground-breaking initiative unites members from across political parties, showcasing a strong commitment to reducing road fatalities in Thailand, where rates remain ten times higher than in the United Kingdom. The four subcommittees are led by influential figures dedicated to driving change, and\u00a0aim to utilise legislative authority, government oversight, and cross-agency collaboration to tackle road safety issues head-on.<\/p>\n

About ThaiRAP<\/strong><\/p>\n

In het Masterplan 2022-2027 van Thailand, het Masterplan Verkeersveiligheid Bangkok 2021-2025 en het Nationale Wegenbeleid zijn doelstellingen voor de sterrenclassificatie vastgelegd. Deze laatste vereisen dat alle nieuwe wegen voldoen aan een veilige technische norm voor weggebruikers door middel van een beoordeling van 3 sterren of hoger. ThaiRAP werd in 2022 onderscheiden met een prijs van de premier voor verkeersveiligheid en het Thaise Ministerie van Plattelandswegen ontving in 2021 de Global Road Achievement Award van de International Road Federation (IRF) voor zijn ge\u00efntegreerde beheersysteem voor verkeersveiligheid, waar ThaiRAP deel van uitmaakt. ThaiRAP heeft 150.737 km aan wegen en ontwerpen beoordeeld (waaronder de recent afgeronde beoordeling van 20.000 km aan snelwegen voor het Ministerie van Wegen) en 10 scholen, waarmee het de veiligheid van US$ 1,6 miljoen aan investeringen in weginfrastructuur heeft be\u00efnvloed. ThaiRAP werkt samen met de Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) om de verkeersveiligheid te verbeteren door middel van capaciteitsopbouw en evaluatie volgens de iRAP-richtlijnen. Zo is een evaluatie van 500 km van het wegennet van de stad afgerond en zijn 360 risicovolle locaties verbeterd. 293 mensen hebben geprofiteerd van wereldwijde\/online trainingen van iRAP en 2.085 mensen zijn getraind tijdens evenementen in Thailand.
