{"id":56121,"date":"2022-06-13T00:02:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-12T23:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irap.org\/?p=56121"},"modified":"2022-07-13T00:13:34","modified_gmt":"2022-07-12T23:13:34","slug":"active-travel-tool-released-in-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irap.org\/nl\/2022\/06\/active-travel-tool-released-in-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Active Travel Tool uitgebracht in het VK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; admin_label=&#8221;section&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.22&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;row&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.12.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>A new planning tool that helps UK local authorities assess how to make walking and cycling safer, more pleasant and less stressful has been launched by UK charity the <a href=\"https:\/\/roadsafetyfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Road Safety Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Developed with funding from the Road Safety Trust, the tool shows how different active travel measures would perform both in terms of the iRAP Star Ratings \u2013 which assess the safety of roads \u2013 and the level of traffic stress.<\/p>\n<p>iRAP\u2019s Global Innovation Manager and Cities Specialist Monica Olyslagers said, \u201cThe Active Travel Tool is an <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/innovation\/\">iRAP Innovation Partnership Initiative<\/a> and great example of a local innovation which builds on the <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/methodology\/\">iRAP Star Rating Methodology<\/a> to meet a local need.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/innovation\/\">iRAP\u2019s Innovation Framework<\/a> manages exciting initiatives underway globally that are <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/innovation\/\"><em>Made Safer by iRAP<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and will help countries accelerate towards the global target of halving road death and injury by 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncreasing levels of active travel has environmental and health benefits, but to achieve truly healthy mobility, it must also be safe and feel safe,\u201d said Kate Fuller, Engineering Director at the Road Safety Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCyclists and pedestrians are known as vulnerable road users for good reason: the frailty of the human body is clear when it shares the same space as motorised traffic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis tool helps to assess which different types of pedestrians and cyclists would feel comfortable using a particular road with different facilities. Making active travel more attractive may also release pent-up demand and help more people make the switch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.12.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation has worked in partnership with Kent, Hampshire, West Sussex, Staffordshire and Warwickshire County Councils as well as Transport for Greater Manchester to develop the tool.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart Fowler, Road Safety Intelligence and Innovations Team Leader, Kent County Council, said: \u201cThe tool allows us to trial the impact of a range of active travel measures on both individual road user risk and levels of stress experienced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding risk and stress together enables us to tackle perceptions of safety which will assist with increasing uptake and acceptability of active travel modes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tool is simple to use, offers a concise visual output and most helpfully; a comparable, evidenced based assessment. The tool aims to help UK road authorities evaluate active travel facilities for both safety according to <a href=\"https:\/\/toolkit.irap.org\/management\/safe-system-approach\/\">Safe System<\/a>\u00a0principles, and age and ability. The tool allows a spot evaluation of the different available facilities for a given road, rather than a network or route-based evaluation that can be achieved using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/rap-tools\/\">full iRAP methodology<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irap.org\/cyclerap\">CycleRAP<\/a>.<\/p><p>The tool uses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/rap-tools\/infrastructure-ratings\/star-ratings\/\">safety Star Ratings<\/a>, together with a set of criteria for age and ability, to compare bicycle and pedestrian facilities, such as paths, crossings and low traffic neighbourhoods (LTN).
