{"id":3732,"date":"2023-02-28T01:36:12","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T14:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.temp.irap-dev.org\/worlds-most-southern-roads-under-spotlight\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T12:40:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T02:40:12","slug":"worlds-most-southern-roads-under-spotlight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irap.org\/nl\/worlds-most-southern-roads-under-spotlight\/","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s most southern roads under spotlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The safety of the world\u2019s most southern and starkly beautiful roads is under the spotlight with an iRAP assessment underway by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mop.gob.cl\/\">Ministry of Public Works<\/a> en <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ddq.cl\/\">DDQ Ingenieursadviseurs<\/a> in the picturesque and mountainous Magallanes, Ays\u00e9n and Los Lagos Regions of Chile.<\/p>\n<p>The study will assess the safety of 53 roads totalling 1,907km across the three regions according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/nl\/methodology\/\">iRAP Methodology<\/a> and propose prioritised <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/nl\/rap-tools\/investment-planning\/safer-roads-investment-plans\/\">Veiligere Weginvesteringsplannen<\/a> to eliminate high-risk road sections to save lives and reduce serious injuries due to road crashes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.temp.irap-dev.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Wiki-world-map-Blue-Marble-MU-900.jpg\" alt=\"Wiki world map Blue Marble MU 900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>De<a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/nl\/rap-tools\/infrastructure-ratings\/star-ratings\/\"> iRAP Star Ratings results<\/a> will be compared to road crash statistics for the last five years on each route of the network.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty road safety engineers and practitioners from the Road Directorate will be trained to build their capacity for ongoing works.<\/p>\n<p>The network under study will include 23 roads totally 952km in Magallanes Region, 22 roads totalling 531km in the Ays\u00e9n Region and 8 roads totalling 423km in the Los Lagos Region.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.temp.irap-dev.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/hile-regions-wiki-MU.png\" alt=\"hile regions wiki MU\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The most southerly Magallanes Region encompasses mountainous peaks and glaciers reaching to Cape Horn. Despite being the largest region, much of the land is isolated and rugged, categorised by low temperatures, strong winds and sheep farming. The majority of the population live in the capital Punta Arenas, a major market city and one of the main hubs for Antarctic exploration. The assessment in Magallanes extends to roads on Navarino Island &#8211; an island located between Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, to the north, and Cape Horn, to the south. The island forms part of the Commune of Cabo de Hornos, the southernmost commune in Chile and in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The middle Ays\u00e9n Region is Chile&#8217;s most sparsely populated. The landscape is marked by glaciations that have formed lakes, fjords and the Patagonian Ice Fields.
