Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van de overheid. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.co.za\/\">Automobilistenvereniging (AA)<\/a> van Zuid-Afrika in het jaarlijkse overzicht van de statistieken over verkeersdoden, dat eind mei werd gepubliceerd door de Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe offici\u00eble cijfers tonen aan dat er in 2019 12.503 mensen omkwamen op de Zuid-Afrikaanse wegen, vergeleken met 12.921 in 2018. Een verbetering, dat zeker, maar nog steeds veel te hoog, vooral gezien het feit dat er technologie voor voertuigveiligheid en andere preventieve maatregelen beschikbaar zijn die dit aantal drastisch kunnen verlagen. We zijn nu op een punt beland waarop we niet langer alleen maar kunnen plannen voor veiligere wegen; actie is nodig, en wel dringend\u201d, aldus de AA.<\/p>\n<p>Volgens de vereniging behoren de volgende maatregelen tot de interventies die de overheid nu kan implementeren:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verkrijgen <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/nl\/3-star-or-better\/\">International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) sterrenbeoordelingen<\/a> van alle wegen in Zuid-Afrika<\/li>\n<li>Het invoeren van verplichte veiligheidsbeoordelingen voor alle nieuwe voertuigen die in het land worden verkocht.<\/li>\n<li>Spoedig herzien en aanpassen van de veiligheidsvoorschriften voor nieuwe voertuigen in Zuid-Afrika.<\/li>\n<li>Introductie van regelgeving die ABS, ESC en twee airbags verplicht stelt als minimale veiligheidsnormen voor nieuwe voertuigen.<\/li>\n<li>Politiebewaking tijdens de feestdagen, het hele jaar door.<\/li>\n<li>Acties tegen rijden onder invloed dit weekend<\/li>\n<li>Meer aandacht voor verkeersovertredingen en betere handhaving van het gebruik van kinderzitjes, illegaal gebruik van elektronische apparaten tijdens het rijden en snelheidsovertredingen.<\/li>\n<li>Het opnieuw invoeren van verkeersveiligheidseducatie en rijopleiding op scholen.<\/li>\n<li>Invoering van een snelheidslimiet van 30 km\/u in gebieden nabij scholen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201c&quot;Bijzonder zorgwekkend is het feit dat 40 procent van alle dodelijke slachtoffers voetgangers zijn, min of meer hetzelfde percentage als in de afgelopen tien jaar. Dit wijst erop dat er onvoldoende middelen worden ingezet voor voetgangers op de weg, en dat er onvoldoende aandacht is voor verkeersveiligheidsvoorlichting aan zowel bestuurders als voetgangers. We zouden graag zien dat voorlichting over de veiligheid van voetgangers met evenveel enthousiasme wordt gegeven als de huidige voorlichting over COVID-19, met name op plekken waar veel voetgangers samenkomen&quot;, aldus de vereniging.<\/p>\n<p>Het rapport stelt dat Zuid-Afrika, gezien de huidige stand van zaken, weinig kans heeft om de Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelstelling van de Verenigde Naties (UNSDG) te halen, namelijk het halveren van het aantal verkeersdoden en -gewonden tegen 2030.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Lees het volledige artikel van de Automobile Association of South Africa. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.co.za\/insights\/annual-road-fatalities-down-but-still-too-high\">hier<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Volgens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccinesforroads.org\/irap-big-data-tool\/\">De Big Data-tool van iRAP<\/a>, Het geschatte aantal dodelijke slachtoffers per jaar in Zuid-Afrika bedraagt 14.507 (WHO 2015).
