\n Making Every Journey on a Road Safe <\/h2>\n \n

T<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP)<\/span>\u00a0is a global charity dedicated to\u00a0<\/span>eliminating<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>high<\/span>\u2011ri<\/span>sk<\/span>\u00a0r<\/span>oads and saving lives.\u00a0<\/span>We provide world-leading methodologies and tools for measuring and managing road infrastructure safety, and we<\/span>\u00a0work in partnership with governments, road authorities, development banks, research institutions, and civil society to make the world\u2019s roads safer for everyone<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The iRAP tools have been used in more than 130 countries to assess the safety of some 3 million km of streets, roads and highways and influence design and construction projects worth more than $110 billion. It is estimated that projects which have made use of the iRAP tools and resources have prevented more than 860,000 deaths and serious injuries globally by the end of 2024.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n Why Road Safety Matters <\/h2>\n \n
\n

Ea<\/span>ch year, road crashes claim\u00a0<\/span>more than 1.19 million lives worldwide<\/span>\u00a0and leave tens of millions more seriously injured. Road trauma is the leading cause of death for children and young people aged 5\u201329 and disproportionately affects people in low<\/span>\u2011\u00a0and\u00a0middle<\/span>\u2011income\u00a0countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

R<\/span>oad crashes have severe and lasting consequences, causing immense suffering, economic hardship and poverty for families, and cost some\u00a0<\/span>USD 10 billion worldwide<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>every day<\/i><\/a><\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0About\u00a0<\/span>one-third of deaths are work-related<\/span><\/a>, emphasising the importance of safety to human capital, the economy and productivity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Road deaths are not inevitable. Most are\u00a0<\/span>predictable and preventable<\/span>\u00a0through better road design, safer speeds, and\u00a0evidence<\/span>\u2011based\u00a0investment decisions. iRAP exists to turn that evid<\/span>ence into action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n

\n The Role of Roads in Safety <\/h2>\n \n
\n

As was reported in the WHO Global Status Report<\/span>\u00a0on Road Safety<\/span>, roads around the world are not fundamentally safe: 21% of roads assessed using the iRAP methodology meet a 3-star or higher rating<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(out of 5-stars)<\/span>\u00a0in relation to pedestrians and powered two- and three-wheelers; 23% for cyclists; and 40% for passenger vehicles.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A genuinely sustainable transport system protects everyone that uses it. Ensuring that streets,\u00a0<\/span>roads<\/span>\u00a0and highways are rated at least 3-stars (out of a total of 5 stars) and are fundamentally safe for all expected modes of travel, abilities, and journeys is essential in achieving this.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n \n
