Each day, 3,500 people are killed in road crashes and 100,000 suffer life-changing injuries. Without intervention, 15 million people will die on global roads and 500 million people will be injured in the decade to 2030 at a cost of USD$24 trillion in crash costs to the community.<\/p>\n

Fatalities are just the tip of the iceberg of road trauma, with life-changing injuries presenting an enormous cost borne by individuals and the community for years.<\/p>\n

Raising the profile of road crash injury and the potential of the Safe System Approach and the elimination of high-risk roads to prevent injury was the key goal of participation.<\/p>\n

Keynote speaker: Peter Frazer sharing Sarah’s story<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Peter Frazer, President of Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH)<\/a> presented an emotional tribute to his daughter Sarah, tragically killed in 2012 by a truck driver in a completely avoidable crash on the Hume Highway.<\/p>\n

Due to the unsafe design of the road, she was unable to get her car fully off the road and it, and the NRMA tow truck that came to assist her, were struck. Since then, Peter has used his 40+ years\u2019 experience in social justice, policy, research, law enforcement and intelligence, to positively influence legislative reform, infrastructure policy and community advocacy for 3-star or better safer roads.<\/p>\n

Exhibiting the Road to Zero through the Safe System Approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n

[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/display-image-900.jpg” title_text=”display image 900″ _builder_version=”4.12.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.12.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]iRAP exhibited at the event in partnership with the Australian Transport Accident Commission (TAC)<\/a>, \u00a0presenting the \u201cRoad to Zero Through the Safe System Approach\u201d.<\/p>\n

The exhibit featured a 6m graphics wall<\/a> showcasing the necessary safe system elements to achieve zero road deaths – safe road users in 5-star vehicles on 5-star roads, travelling at safe speeds.<\/p>\n

It also included an iRAP-TAC animation presenting the Role of Safe Roads in the Safe System.
\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_video src=”https:\/\/youtu.be\/eIuPYisLqzM” _builder_version=”4.12.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_video][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.12.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]Victoria\u2019s road safety journey since 1970 was showcased as an example for other countries and partners to learn from. In Victoria, an 80 per cent reduction in annual road deaths has been achieved with the implementation of a range of road user behaviour, enforcement, education, legislation, and infrastructure interventions over time.
\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/RtZ-Vic-1.png” title_text=”RtZ Vic” _builder_version=”4.12.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.12.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]The exhibit was complemented with a range of interactives allowing visitors to take Victoria\u2019s road safety journey from 1970 \u2013 2050 via virtual reality headsets, test their knowledge on speed and crash outcomes<\/a> and explore how safe their country\u2019s roads are<\/a>, the human and economic impact of injury, the road attributes that matter and the Business Case for Safer Roads.<\/p>\n

iRAP and TAC staff were on hand to answer questions and provide a range of information resources on iRAP in Countries<\/a>, Star Rating for Schools<\/a>, CycleRAP<\/a>, Star Rating for Designs<\/a>, RAP Tools<\/a> and TAC\u2019s Road to Zero Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n
