The\u00a0Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS<\/a>) and the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP<\/a>) have re-signed a Centre of Excellence\u00a0<\/a>agreement today, ensuring RAP protocols and models continue to benefit from the evidence-based research undertaken by the Institute.<\/p>\n

Speaking from the virtual signing ceremony today which was held during ASEAN Road Safety Week in a very tight SOP compliance, MIROS Director-General Honorary Assistant Commissioner (CD) Ir. Ts. Dr. Khairil Anwar bin Abu Kassim, Adjunct Professor, said we are delighted to announce our continued partnership with iRAP as a Centre of Excellence alongside 10 other world-leading research institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cMyRAP, the road assessment programme for Malaysia, was launched in 2019 and uses the evidence-based Star Rating methodology<\/a> and investment planning tools<\/a> to assess high-risk roads and inform investment in 3-star or better road infrastructure. We are pleased to be involved in the use and ongoing development of the protocols, helping to ensure they take into account the latest research and technical innovation,\u201d Dr Khairil said.<\/p>\n

iRAP CEO Rob McInerney who participated in the event by video said MIROS conducts world-leading road safety research in five pillars including better roads and safer drives and MyRAP is a regional leader in improving the safety of its road network.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a member of iRAP\u2019s Global Technical Committee<\/a>, MIROS\u2019s expertise informs the iRAP protocols, tools and innovation framework offered for free for the benefit of all countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust one area of MIROS\u2019 expertise is motorcycle safety. With 67 per cent of travel on the world\u2019s roads rated an unsafe 1- to 2-stars in safety for motorcyclists, MIROS\u2019 research is valuable for informing our model for this road user group and saving lives. MIROS is supporting MyRAP\u2019s work in collaboration with ThaiRAP, IndiaRAP<\/a> and ChinaRAP to advance motorcyclist safety in Asia,\u201d Mr McInerney said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud to partner with MIROS and all our iRAP Centres of Excellence to provide the evidence-based global standard for road infrastructure safety to support achievement of UN Targets 3 and 4 by 2030 to save 450,000 lives a year,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
