Le Fondation pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 routi\u00e8re<\/a> et RAC Foundation<\/a> recently hosted a reception to celebrate winning, along with the Department for Transport<\/a>, a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award<\/a> for their \u201cfine example of collaboration\u201d and the \u201coutstanding achievement\u201d of the Safer Roads Fund*.<\/p>\n

HRH Prince Michael of Kent presented the award. The RAC Foundation\u2019s Steve Gooding, Road Safety Foundation Chair Lord Whitty and Emma Ward, Director General of the Department of Transport welcomed guests from local authorities and National Highways whose roads** were identified for safety improvements through investment from the fund.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Prince Michael said:\u00a0\u201cWe all understand just how important it is to ensure high standard roads for the benefit of the community and the economy to provide roads which are of the highest safety standards is equally important but to do so is expensive. So to have a well-funded, scientifically-based process for determining priorities is essential.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve Gooding, Director of the RAC Foundation, said: \u201cWe were delighted to commission and financially support the Road Safety Foundation to embark on the Safer Roads Pathfinder Project, which quickly made the case for a larger scale Safer Roads Fund. The pathfinder and wider Department for Transport project together represent a significant step change in practice in supporting local authorities to apply a new proactive safe systems approach to risk management on exceptionally high-risk routes. The tools and guidance developed by this project will undoubtedly benefit countries beyond the UK. We are delighted that the scope and impact of this work has been recognised with this award.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roads Minister Baroness Vere previously said: \u201cI was honoured that our Safer Roads Fund won a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award at yesterday evening\u2019s event. Despite already having some of the safest roads in the world, a light was shone on all the work being done to make them safer still. This fund alone is expected to save nearly 1500 lives over the next twenty years, and we will continue our efforts to save countless more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suzy Charman, Executive Director of the Road Safety Foundation said: \u201cWe look forward to building on the success of the Safer Roads Fund in our work with local authorities, continuing to help deliver the best possible outcomes in making their roads safer.\u201d<\/p>\n

About the Safer Roads Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n

Le Fonds pour des routes plus s\u00fbres a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9 suite au succ\u00e8s d'un programme pilote men\u00e9 par la Fondation pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 routi\u00e8re, commandit\u00e9 et financ\u00e9 par la Fondation RAC et le minist\u00e8re des Transports. En 2018, le programme du Fonds pour des routes plus s\u00fbres s'est concentr\u00e9 sur la mise en \u0153uvre de mesures correctives d'ing\u00e9nierie routi\u00e8re sur les 50 tron\u00e7ons de routes locales de cat\u00e9gorie A les plus \u00e0 risque en Angleterre. L'ensemble des projets du Fonds pour des routes plus s\u00fbres de 2018 devrait permettre d'\u00e9viter environ 1\u00a0450 accidents mortels et graves au cours des 20 prochaines ann\u00e9es. La valeur de la pr\u00e9vention pour ces projets est estim\u00e9e \u00e0 550 millions de livres sterling, contre un co\u00fbt total des traitements de 125 millions de livres sterling. Le ratio avantages\/co\u00fbts pour ce portefeuille de routes est estim\u00e9 \u00e0 4,4, ce qui signifie que pour chaque livre sterling investie, 4,40 livres sterling sont r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9es en termes de b\u00e9n\u00e9fice pour la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Ceci d\u00e9montre que les interventions en mati\u00e8re de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 routi\u00e8re peuvent \u00eatre comp\u00e9titives par rapport \u00e0 d'autres grands projets de transport.<\/p>\n

About the Award<\/strong><\/p>\n

Le Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards<\/a> recognise achievements and innovations which will improve road safety. Established by HRH Prince Michael of Kent in 1987 and organised by RoadSafe, each year the most outstanding examples of international road safety initiatives are given public recognition through the scheme.<\/p>\n

Reactions to the Award:<\/p>\n

In a letter to Dr Suzy Charman, Executive Director of the Road Safety Foundation, His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent said:\u00a0\u201cI was delighted when the Westminster Government announced the Safer Roads Fund. The importance of sound investment at local level will provide many long-overdue improvements, not just in the 50 most dangerous stretches of \u2018A\u2019 roads in England, but elsewhere too. The innovative approach which the fund has triggered by bringing new methodologies to so many local authorities is indeed a step-change in practice and a huge stimulus to deploying a Safe Systems approaches by many roads authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roads Minister Baroness Vere said:\u00a0\u201cOur Safer Roads Fund has been recognised for its life saving work. It was designed to prevent thousands of tragedies on our roads, and the Department will continue to work tirelessly on this priority as we move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Suzy Charman, Executive Director of the Road Safety Foundation said:\u00a0\u201cThe DfT\u2019s investment in the Safer Roads Fund is recognised with this award and we hope that the fund will be replicated both here in UK and overseas.\u00a0 We share this award with the RAC Foundation whose initial support allowed us to undertake the pathfinder project that was a catalyst to the Safer Roads Fund, and of course we also share the award with our local authority partners who worked hard to design and implement their schemes.\u201d<\/p>\n
