Road safety can be impacted in three key ways:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>When road users navigate damaged or affected roads.<\/li>\n<li>When road users are detoured around damaged roads and onto alternative routes.<\/li>\n<li>When roads that have been rehabilitated introduce new safety risks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The socio-economic impacts of failing to develop resilient networks are high. Road crashes have a <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/safety-insights\/human-toll\/\">devastating human impact<\/a>. High maintenance costs, decreased road service life, and disruption of access to services and the flow of goods to markets can significantly affect disaster recovery, food security, transportation and trade.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/irap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Climate-and-road-safety-infographic-CANVA.png&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Climate and road safety infographic CANVA&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px||||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Climate-resilient road systems are designed, built, and maintained to withstand the impacts of climate change. They should remain functional, safe, and durable despite changing environmental conditions. Safety is a key factor in creating this change. When people feel that an environment is safe, they are more likely to feel comfortable walking and cycling and using public transport. The iRAP methodology and tools are available to help planners and designers ensure that pedestrian and cycling facilities are rated 3-stars or better for safety.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=&#8221;#19486a&#8221; divider_weight=&#8221;2px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;0px||0px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||0px||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>iRAP Tools and Climate Change<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The iRAP <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/methodology\/\">methodology<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/rap-tools\/\">tools<\/a> enable road authorities, development banks, financing institutions, institutes and NGOs to assess and improve the safety of road infrastructure investment and designs. _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/star-rating-for-designs\/\"><strong>Star Rating for Designs<\/strong><\/a> is ensuring road safety is \u2018built in\u2019 to a road design for all road users before the commencement of civil works.<\/p>\n<p>iRAP assessments are informing road upgrades which support the transition to multi-modal transport. 3-star or better Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors not only reduce carbon emissions with consolidated individual car journeys but also optimise safety and reduce travel times for commuters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/starratingforschools.org\/\"><strong>Star Rating for Schools<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/irap.org\/cyclerap\/\"><strong>CycleRAP<\/strong><\/a> are supporting safer school and cycling journeys which encourage walking and cycling.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243;
