{"id":6270,"date":"2026-03-02T23:22:05","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T12:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.temp.irap-dev.org\/safety-by-design-how-senegals-a1-motorway-cut-deaths-by-24-in-three-years\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T10:57:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T00:57:14","slug":"safety-by-design-how-senegals-a1-motorway-cut-deaths-by-24-in-three-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/irap.org\/es\/safety-by-design-how-senegals-a1-motorway-cut-deaths-by-24-in-three-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Seguridad desde el dise\u00f1o: c\u00f3mo la autopista A1 de Senegal redujo las muertes en un 241 % en tres a\u00f1os"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 24% decrease in deaths and injuries in just three years.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the result achieved between 2022 and 2025 on the Autoroute de l\u2019Avenir (A1) in Dakar, one of Senegal\u2019s busiest highways, connecting the capital to the airport and the country\u2019s main economic regions.<\/p>\n<p>This didn&#8217;t happen by accident.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a targeted action plan and infrastructure improvements carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eiffage.com\/\">Eiffage<\/a> de la Concession de l\u2019Autoroute de l\u2019Avenir (SECAA), a private partner of the Senegalese government, thousands more people are now returning home safely.<\/p>\n<p>iRAP safety assessments helped guide these improvements, with practical measures implemented such as:<\/p>\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f High-containment central dividers and safety barriers.<\/p>\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f Road shoulders with rumble strips.<\/p>\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f Street lighting, particularly in urban areas, and at intersections east of the motorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u27a1\ufe0f Anti-glare screens.<\/p>\n<p>The impact also goes beyond lives saved. Fewer serious crashes has meant fewer towing operations, reduced operating costs, and less traffic congestion. Safety also generates operational and financial benefits.<\/p>\n<p>This is an excellent example of what investing in road safety means in practice. More remains to be done, particularly to improve the safety of powered two-wheelers, but the progress made on the A1 demonstrates what can be achieved when data, financing, and implementation come together.<\/p>\n<p>As Senegal hosts the <a href=\"https:\/\/sn.linkedin.com\/company\/dakar-2026-comit%C3%A9-d-organisation-des-jeux-olympiques-de-la-jeunesse-dakar-2026?trk=public_post-text\">#Dakar2026 Youth Olympic Games<\/a> this year, these improvements are timely.<\/p>\n<p>And the momentum is building.
