Global infrastructure KPIs support Action Plans to achieve 2nd\u00a0Decade Goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The recent UN announcement of the 2nd<\/span>\u00a0Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 calls on all countries to achieve at least a 50% reduction in road deaths and injuries by 2030 and achieve the Global Road Safety Performance Targets<\/a> agreed by Member States. \u00a0As part of your own locally led Road Assessment Programme, iRAP\u2019s Global Infrastructure KPIs<\/a> provide the policy road map and recommended metrics for measuring success.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re shaping your next Road Safety Action Plan, consider including the following targets and actions:<\/p>\n

1. A minimum 50% reduction in road deaths and injuries by 2030 and the associated implementation of the Global Road Safety Performance Targets.<\/p>\n

2. In support of Global Target 3 implement mandatory reporting of the before and after Star Rating performance and predicted deaths and injuries expected over the 20-year life of all infrastructure investment.<\/p>\n

3. In support of Global Target 4 adopt the Global Infrastructure Safety KPIs<\/a> on the roads where 75% of travel occurs for each road user (i.e. 75% of travel for pedestrians, 75% of travel for cyclists, 75% of travel for motorcyclists and 75% of travel for vehicle occupants) and report on these every 3-5 years.<\/p>\n

4. Publish Risk Maps on an annual basis for roads where >75% of travel occurs for each road user (crashes per kilometre and crashes per kilometre travelled) and report the most improved and persistently high-risk roads with associated performance tracking.<\/p>\n

5. Establish a Safer Roads Fund and results based financing initiatives to target speed management, financing and upgrades on the persistently high-risk road sections each year that maximises lives and serious injuries saved per dollar spent.<\/p>\n

About the Decade of Action<\/strong><\/p>\n

The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2021-2030 as the 2nd Decade of Action and released a Draft Resolution<\/a>. The Resolution encourages Member States to make efforts to protect all road users through safer road infrastructure by taking into account the needs of motorized and non-motorized transport, and other vulnerable road users, especially on the highest-risk roads with high rates of crashes.<\/p>\n
