Getting ready for safer roads in Accra

Safer roads in Accra, Ghana, have moved a step closer following an iRAP training exercise for local engineers.

Engineers from city and national agencies as well as consultancy and contracting firms took part in the three day workshop in May which was led by the AfricaRAP lead Racheal Nganwa. The training exercise followed a relaunch of the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) project in Accra by the recently elected Mayor and his team.

‘Last year 110km of roads were assessed in Accra,’ Racheal said. ‘We are now undertaking an additional 100km of assessments and we hope this extra training will give people the skills to deliver assessments in Accra and across Ghana.’

Racheal added that the BIGRS project in Accra had received valuable support from the new City Mayor, Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah, who had shown great commitment to delivering safer roads.
