Accreditation

The collection and creation of high quality and accurate data is essential to iRAP’s approach to assessing the safety of roads. The systems and people involved in road inspections and rating road attributes for an iRAP project must demonstrate a high level of capability before they are accredited to participate.

To gain accreditation to undertake iRAP road inspections, a supplier must demonstrate that their inspection system is capable of exceeding requirements that relate to:

  • occupational health and safety
  • the collection of data, such as location references and digital images
  • the ability for independent teams to ‘rate’ the data in an office environment.

The quality and accuracy of the road rating process is managed through:

  • training of the raters
  • supervision of the raters
  • independent quality reviews.

Rating training is typically carried out by iRAP staff on a project-by-project basis, or on a regional basis where there is sufficient demand.  Because there is a strong interdependence between the road inspections and road rating, iRAP’s preference is that these tasks are undertaken by the same supplier.

If you or your organization is interested in gaining accreditation to participate in iRAP projects, contact iRAP’s Engineering Manager, James Bradford, at james.bradford@irap.org.
